Shetland Fair Isle Knitwear

Shetland Fair Isle Knitwear

The Shetland Isles are Scotland's most northerly inhabited islands. Closer to
Norway than Aberdeen, and famed for their traditional fishing and crofting,
these windswept and remote islands are the home of traditional Fair Isle
knitwear. There is only one legitimate place that Fair Isle knitwear can
come from and that is the Shetland isles.

There are fewer skilled hand knitters on the Islands nowadays but
many women are keeping this beautiful and distinctive craft alive with the
production of gloves, mitts scarves, shawls and hats.

Currently enjoying a fashion revival, we are delighted to be able to stock a
range of ladies Fair Isles gloves.

Hand knitted by Annie Adamson on a traditional Shetland croft in
Cunningsburgh (pictured at work) these gloves will make a truly unique and
beautiful Scottish gift or personal treat.

Before Christmas, a wider range of Fair Isle knitwear will be available for
purchase from our South Street Gift Shop. Orders taken in advance on 01738 449227.
